Online Transportation Services in Indonesia


Online transportation services are already well-known and well accepted in developed countries such as the USA and Europe countries. In Indonesia, this type of service is now getting popular and many international companies were already started to expand their market in Indonesia. However, what is exactly online transportation service ? Some studies use the term ride sharing to define online transportation services. According to Wallsten (Munajat, 2017), it is called ride sharing due to the cars or vehicle used is owned by individual which is then ‘shared’ with other when delivering the services. In Indonesia, the hype of online transportation was started when GO-JEK was founded in 2010. GO-JEK began with 20 drivers and now they already have more than 200 thousand drivers in several big cities in Indonesia. The application for GO-JEK was launched in early 2015 and now being continuously upgraded. In 2014, Uber entered Indonesia market and followed by Grab in 2015. Those three are the top three of Indonesia’s online transportation services in 2017. However, GO-JEK is leading with the largest number of users and drivers in many cities in Indonesia. And here several reasons why people choose online transportation services as their priority to fulfill their commuting needs.

 Online transportations have cheap prices. Based on survey by YLKI, 84,1% correspondent said the main reason they choose online transportation because lower prices. Several online transportation services used several promo to attract more customers. For example, voucher to reduce the price to get more cheap, discount for loyal customer who used their service for a long time, cashback for Rp. 25.000 every 25x transaction through online transportation and many more discounts you can find while you use online transportation applications. With all of this discount and cheap prices are affordable for most online transportation customers in Indonesia. Just like F Amelia who use online transportation for the first time because of discount, she said it’s very good and recommendable to use online transportation.

 Online transportation have better and faster access . Still based on the same survey by YLKI, 81,9% correspondent said online transportation have fast access because the customers don't have to go to a place where the driver is, instead the drivers go to the customer’s place. It is cut several times for the customer who has an urgent appointment and must hurry to their destinations. Since most online transportation driver in Indonesia use motorcycle as their main vehicle than a car, it can be said many customers view online transportation as one way to get away from traffic jams. Especially in urban cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan who need high and fast mobility to commuting from one are to another area. C Kartono, one of GO-JEK customers in Jakarta said “Absolute convenience !! In a crowded city like Jakarta, GO-JEK is the best solution to ever existed in the realms of men. The app is damn user friendly as well, completely hassle-free. Loved it!”.

Customer more comfortable with online transportation than conventional transportation. Based on survey 78,8% correspondent said it is very comfortable to commuting by online transportation because hospitality of the drivers. One of the online transportation customers, Isro (35) said, “ Apps make it easier for customer like me, especially for destination that I never visited before. Only open online application on my phone and click ‘order’, in a few seconds, the driver will contact us. And also we know the driver's whereabouts through apps”. With all of this reason, it is proved that online transportation made people commuting needs to be more easier. So, what are you waiting for, just abandon conventional transportation and install online transportation in your phone to get better transportation for your commuting needs !
